Enlarged Pores
Pores cannot permanently open, close or shrink
Pore size is primarily determined by genetics and skin type. Pores do not have muscles and cannot physically open or close. Skincare can manage how pores appear — by keeping them clear, improving the texture around them, and reducing sebum — but it cannot permanently alter the size of the pore structure itself.
Visibly large pores are a common concern, particularly for those with oily or combination skin. While pore size cannot be permanently changed, a consistent Korean skincare routine focused on cleansing, gentle exfoliation and the right ingredients can meaningfully improve how pores appear.
This guide explains what actually influences visible pore size, which ingredients may help, and what to realistically expect.

What influences visible pore size
Genetics and skin type
The primary determinant of pore size. Oily skin types tend to have larger, more visible pores — this is genetic.
Sebum and congestion
When pores are congested with sebum, dead skin cells and product buildup, they appear larger. Keeping them clear improves appearance.
Age and elasticity
Loss of skin firmness with age reduces the structure around pores, making them appear more visible.
UV damage
Cumulative sun exposure reduces skin elasticity and firmness over years, contributing to more visible pores.
Skin texture
Rough, uneven skin texture around pores makes them appear more prominent. Improved surface texture helps.
What Korean skincare can support
May improve pore appearance
- Keeping pores clear of congestion with double cleansing and BHA
- Improving skin texture around pores with gentle exfoliation
- Sebum regulation with niacinamide (may visibly reduce pore appearance)
- Preventing UV-related elasticity loss with daily SPF
Cannot promise
- Permanently shrinking pores
- Making pores invisible — pores are a normal part of skin
- Changing genetically determined pore size
- Identical results for everyone
Key ingredients and approaches
Niacinamide (5%)
One of the most studied ingredients for visible pore size — may reduce pore appearance through sebum regulation and texture improvement.
Salicylic acid (BHA)
Oil-soluble; penetrates into pores to dissolve congestion. Use 1-3x per week to keep pores clear.
Double cleansing
Oil cleanser removes the sebum and SPF that block pores; water cleanser follows up. Effective and barrier-friendly.
Gentle AHA (1-2x/week)
Improves skin texture around pores, reducing their visible prominence.
Non-comedogenic SPF
Daily SPF prevents UV damage to skin elasticity — supporting the skin structure that keeps pores looking smaller.
A pore-focused routine approach
Gentle cleanser → niacinamide toner → lightweight moisturiser → non-comedogenic SPF.
Oil cleanser → gel cleanser → niacinamide toner → lightweight moisturiser.
Replace regular toner with a BHA (salicylic acid) toner or pad after cleansing. Do not use on the same night as AHAs or retinoids.
Timeline expectations
With consistent double cleansing and BHA use, pore congestion can clear within 2–4 weeks, which often produces a visible improvement in pore appearance. Niacinamide-related improvements typically develop over 4–8 weeks of daily use. Results vary significantly based on skin type and the primary cause of enlarged-looking pores.
