Korean Essences

Korean essence products — lightweight hydrating treatment for skin

Essences are one of the most distinctively Korean steps in a skincare routine — lightweight, concentrated hydration layers that sit between toner and serum. They are associated with the deep hydration-focused philosophy of Korean beauty, and some of the most revered Korean skincare products are essences, particularly those made with fermented ingredients.

This guide explains what makes an essence different from a toner or serum, the role of fermentation in K-beauty essences, and how to use them effectively.

Fermented essences — a K-beauty signature

Fermentation has a long history in Korean food culture (kimchi, doenjang, gochujang), and it has been applied to skincare with the understanding that fermented ingredients may be more bioavailable, more potent and better tolerated than unfermented equivalents.

In skincare fermentation, beneficial yeasts or bacteria break down larger molecules — proteins, carbohydrates — into smaller fragments that may penetrate the skin more easily. The process also produces beneficial metabolites such as amino acids, organic acids and vitamins. Fermented rice, saccharomyces, galactomyces, and botanical ferments are common in Korean essences. These products often have a slightly yeasty or fermented smell that is characteristic of the category.

Key ingredients to look for in essences

Galactomyces ferment filtrate

A yeast ferment associated with brightening and skin clarity — a core ingredient in many popular Korean essences.

Saccharomyces ferment filtrate

Fermented yeast extract with hydrating and skin-support properties.

Rice ferment filtrate

A fermented rice derivative associated with brightening, smoothing and traditional K-beauty heritage.

Hyaluronic acid

A humectant included in many essences for immediate hydration layering.

Beta-glucan

A polysaccharide with deep soothing and hydrating properties, found in many calming essences.

Centella asiatica

In calming essence formulations, centella is used for its anti-inflammatory and barrier-supportive properties.

Is an essence necessary?

No — essences are a beneficial addition rather than a requirement. A well-built routine of cleanser + toner + serum + moisturiser + SPF is effective without a dedicated essence step. Essences add depth and hydration that many people find makes a visible difference, particularly for dry, dehydrated or dull skin. They are a good step to add once you have your basics established, rather than a starting point.
